I got the opportunity to run a workshop at the Research and Design Summit held in August 2019 alongside my friend Adrienne Klum. We were both interested in helping people become better listeners.
As professional creators of experiences, listening skills are integral to understanding people and their motivations, collaborating with others, and producing meaningful outcomes. However, we often undervalue listening skills in favor of more individualistic behavior.
This 2 hour interactive workshop included group discussions, listening content and theory and games to apply and practice the theory covered.
Our workshop takeaways:
- Discover the impact of listening
- Understand what gets in the way of listening
- Understand methods for active listening
- Practice your listening skills with games
- Set a personal goal for a new listening practice
I just wanted to thank Adrienne and Larisa for their work with Listening for Deeper Meaning. I’ve been trying really hard not to interrupt to problem-solve, and also pausing for 3 seconds after someone has finished speaking, and it’s been a real help!

I’ve been more aware of non verbal communication! I also have thought of this workshop several times since :heartbeat:
